About our practice

Céramique Paris began in 2018 when Marie Dubois transformed a former printing workshop into a ceramic studio. The space retains its industrial character while housing modern kilns and equipment designed for both functional pottery and sculptural work.

Our approach values the material itself. Clay responds to pressure, moisture, and heat in ways that demand attention and adaptation. This relationship between maker and medium informs everything we create and teach.

Philosophy

We believe in slow making. Each piece requires multiple stages across several weeks: throwing or hand-building, drying, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing. This extended timeline creates space for intentionality at every step.

The studio works primarily with stoneware and porcelain. These materials offer different characteristics. Stoneware provides structural strength and earthy tones. Porcelain delivers translucency and refined surfaces. Both require specific firing temperatures and glaze formulations.

Approach to teaching

Workshops balance technical instruction with creative exploration. Students learn fundamental techniques while developing their own aesthetic direction. We maintain small class sizes to ensure individual attention and meaningful feedback.

The goal is not to replicate a specific style but to understand principles that enable independent practice. Participants leave with knowledge they can continue developing beyond the workshop environment.

Studio environment

The workspace includes eight pottery wheels, multiple work tables for hand-building, and extensive storage for works in progress. Natural light enters through north-facing windows, creating consistent conditions throughout the day.

We maintain an extensive glaze library with recipes developed over years of testing. Students in advanced courses learn to mix and test their own surface treatments using base formulas adapted to specific aesthetic goals.

Material sourcing

Clay bodies come from specialized suppliers who process materials to exact specifications. Our primary stoneware contains a blend of ball clay, kaolin, and feldspar that throws well and fires to a warm buff color. The porcelain formula emphasizes plasticity while maintaining translucency after firing.

Glaze ingredients are sourced individually rather than purchased as premixed batches. This allows precise control over final results and the ability to modify formulas based on specific firing conditions or desired effects.
